This paper focuses on the grammatical category of voice in the context of Japanese language teaching and aims to analyse the categories of the passive and the causative starting from the experience at Bologna University. The study provides a broad theoretical framework on the basis of the recent literature on linguistics in order to stimulate a double intralingual and interlingual reflection in Italian students. The contribution underlines the importance of drawing on Japanese literature in order to acquire a shared metalanguage that can stimulate further research.
